Who we are
Lighthouse Legal is a boutique law firm based in Charleston, South Carolina, and serving clients in multiple states.
What Data We Collect
On our website: None. We get lots of attempts to hack into our site, and we do collect that for our protection use, but other than that, we do not track, collect data on, store, or otherwise care who you are (as far as your data is concerned). We don’t run any advertising bots or marketing/analytics. We believe in privacy.
As a client: If you are a client of ours, we retain your information securely for as long as is necessary to perform your representation, depending on the scope of the engagement (for example: if litigation, from the time you give us your documents until the time the litigation, per the scope of the agreement, has concluded, and for a time after that depending on what the law, our insurance, and the rules of professional conduct require – sometimes we are required to maintain documents regarding our representation of you for a few years). Any data that is stored is kept completely offline in servers that are physically disconnected from the internet so as to be protected from hackers, wherever possible. We also maintain some physical hard copies of files handed to us in person. Those are returned to you, or shredded, after the end of the above time period, per your instructions.
If you have come to us to seek counseling, we may have to retain basic information for future conflict checks – we keep as little as possible and for as short a time as the law requires, after which time that data is purged.
Cookies
Mmm, cookies. “Cookies” are website trackers some websites download and use to track you (your browser and its activity). They can be used to see what you do online. We don’t do that. However, if you are logged in elsewhere, those other sites may track that you are visiting us here. That is something we cannot change. Sites such as Facebook track you and your internet/physical location usage in order to sell your data and market to you. If you visit our site and you have the Facebook app installed, for instance, or are logged in on the browser, Facebook may start showing you ads for law firms. We recommend regularly removing cookies and logging out of social media apps and browser sessions for your own privacy, as that data is aggregated and used in a profile (Facebook alone makes roughly four dollars a month off of your data, as of a couple years ago).
Who we share your data with
Nobody. We don’t track, we don’t market, that’s it. If you want to reach us, that’s your choice alone. If we turn on commenting for the articles, whatever you post via your own words is what gets shared.
The bottom line is that we feel strongly about privacy. We are privacy specialists. We believe in “Opt In” rather than “Opt Out” meaning that we feel you should be informed and asked first before any data collection happens, and that you should have to choose to “Opt In,” rather than what usually happens today, where your data is simply taken and only sometimes does anyone even tell you they’ve done it, along with being forced to have to do the work to request to “Opt Out” – and who knows if they’ll oblige. We don’t do that. If you are facing that kind of situation, give us a call and maybe we can help. It is important because the sharing of your data is a one-way valve – once the data is given up, it cannot be recollected. It deserves protection!
